New records of Metarbelidae from Namibia and description of a new species from the Great Escarpment (Lepidoptera, Cossoidea)

Abstract :

New faunistic data from Namibia are given for the family Metarbelidae. A total of 17 species are recorded and a new species is described: Metarbela dietermeyi sp. nov. The adults of the new species and specimens of Lukeniana raymondrevellii and two Selagena species are illustrated in colour. The male genitalia and wing venation of M. dietermeyi sp. nov. are depicted as line drawings and its systematic position is briefly discussed.

Ithome concolorella (Chambers, 1875) on Ascension Island (Lepidoptera: Cosmopterigidae: Chrysopeleiinae)

Abstract :

The author reports on the occurrence of Ithome concolorella on Ascension Island. Although it is a relatively recent introduction, the species has spread quickly over all parts of the island, with highest abundances recorded in lower and mid altitudes. Larvae have not yet been found, but it is assumed that they feed on introduced plant species, such as Mexican Thorn, Prosopis juliflora and Horse Tamarind, Leucaena leucocephala.

Studies on Crambidae VI: Cristabotys gen. nov. a new genus of Spilomelinae from Africa (Lepidoptera: Pyraloidea: Crambidae: Spilomelinae)

Abstract :

A new genus Cristabotys gen. nov. is erected in the Spilomelinae for the species Pyrausta pastrinalis Guenée,1854. Data on the food plant and distribution are given and the systematic position is discussed. Adults, larva and genitalia are illustrated. Similar looking species, Pramadea ultratrinalis (Marion,1954) comb. nov. and Patania straminea (Butler,1875) comb. nov., are compared to Cristabotys pastrinalis (Guenée,1854) comb. nov.

The potential of Malaise traps as an important tool in butterfly (Lepidoptera, Papilionoidea) inventories, based on studies conducted in Republic of Congo

Abstract :

Results of butterflies sampled as by-catch in Malaise traps deployed in indigenous forests at Parc National de Nouabalé-Ndoki, Republic of Congo are presented. Using traps deployed with cyanide as a killing agent, rather than the standard ethanol, 153 species of butterfly belonging to five families were sampled, which constituted nearly one-third of the butterfly species known from the Park, with numerous species not encountered during general collecting. The benefits and drawbacks of using this technique, as well as the potential for these traps to be used as part of future butterfly inventories are discussed. The species samples are presented in a tabulated form.
