Title : Defoliation by the Large Emerald Pearl Stemorrhages sericea (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)
Abstract : The defoliation of Tabernaemontana ventricosa Hochst ex A. D. C. (APOCYNACEAE) by Stemorrhages sericea (Lepitora: Pyralidae) in the vicinity of Eshowe, Eshowe, South Africa is reported. A further host-plant Voacanga thouarsii Reomer & Schultes (APOCYNACEAE) for S. sericea is recorded. The habits of the larvae of S. sericea are described and some of the early stages are illustrated. T. ventricosa and V. thouarsii are also recorded as host-plants of the larvae of Negera natalensis (Fedler, 1874) [Drepanidae].
