Welcome to May’s newsletter!

Apologies for the late appearance of May’s newsletter: I’ve been on a lengthy Zambian butterfly expedition and I’m now busy sorting out five weeks’ worth of emails and other correspondence. I usually trawl Facebook and the various LepSoc Africa WhatsApp groups in search of butterfly-related photographs and news articles, but I’ve probably missed several items this month: if you see anything from April that should be included in the next edition of ABN, please let me know.

It is mid-winter in South Africa, and butterflies are relatively scarce. There is however plenty of news from further north, and LepSoc Africa has been exceptionally busy with numerous projects and butterfly-related initiatives.

Welcome to Septembers newsletter!

July’s newsletter concluded eight years of African Butterfly News; forty-eight editions, comprising 3 742 pages; 3 185 articles written by 276 authors and containing about 1 200 000 words. Will the newsletter continue? This is a decision for the new LepSoc Africa council, due to be elected at the Annual General Meeting on Saturday 21 September. I’m happy to continue compiling a newsletter, but there may have to be some changes: refer to “The Last Eight Years” elsewhere in this edition.

November’s newsletter represents the 50th edition of African Butterfly News; almost 4 000 pages to date and counting.LepSoc Africa (LSA) successfully hosted its 40th Annual Conference (41st Annual General Meeting) in Hermannsburg, and a new LSA Council was elected – refer to additional news elsewhere in this newsletter.

While there haven’t been too many unusual butterfly records locally in 2024, there is plenty of news regarding LepSoc Africa activities and personnel.The Centre for African Butterflies and Moths (CAB) has made great progress, and the Highveld Butterfly Club has a new chairperson.
