A short visit to Klouto (near Kaplimé), Togo Mts., Togo in April 2005 resulted in several interesting butterfly records from the country, including several species that had not previously been recorded.  In April 2008 and 2009 additional expeditions were organized to conduct research on fauna of Klouto and Mount Agou near Kpalimé.  Besides these expeditions further butterfly specimens were identified from collections compiled by local collectors to be sold to tourists visiting Klouto, Altogether 170 species have been recorded from the area.  Eresina pseudofusca Stempffer, 1961, Myrina subornata Lathy, 1903, Pilodeudorix caerulea (Druce, 1890), Bicyclus auricruda (Butler, 1868), Bicycluus angulosa (Butler, 1868), Charaxes candiope (Godart, {1824]), Charaxes imperialis Butler, 1874, Hypolimnas dinarcha (Hewitson, 1865), and Gorgyra mocquerysii Holland, 1896 were recorded from the country for the first time.  The composition of the present-day butterfly fauna shows that these localities were once covered with tropical forest but what is lift are only last remnants of the original habitat with a high percentage of ubiquitous and savannah species which could survive or penetrate the area after deforestation.

Euriphene epe sp. nov. is apparently endemic to western Nigeria.  It has been confused with the similar E. tadema.  It joins a number of other species and subspecies showing that the western Nigerian rain forest has had its own independent evolutionary processes.  The new, and very distinctive, Euriphene taigola sp. nov. is endemic to the Liberian sub-region of Africa west of the Dahomey Gap between eastern Sierre Leone and western Sierra Leone and western Côte d’Ivoire, not extending into Ghana sub-region, being most closely related to E. niepelti from the central African area.  Confusion with any other species should not occur.  Euriphene taigola sp. nov. seems to have been missed by all collectors in the area until now and must genuinely be very rare.
